Question by danial_abdat: Any Itinerary suggestion for new years holidays destination in Thailand?
I am planning a backpacking trip with couple of mates to Thailand this new Years holiday. Any suggestions where to go, what to see and best places for photography?
Best answer:
Answer by Pauly 101 Try Northern Thailand. Use Chiang Mai as your base. Things are more reasonable there and although it is a big tourist destination, you’ll find plenty of local color and friendly people as well.
Spend New Year’s Eve in Chiang Mai around the Ta Pae Gate. It will be an unforgettable expierence. Everyone sends lanterns into the sky for good luck in the coming new year. Cost is about a couple of dollars.
Chaing Mai can be used as a base for your treks around northern Thailand. Hilltribes, Chaing Rai, The Golden Triangle, elephant trips are all within easy reach.
The temples in and around Chaing Mai are interesting. The main temple in the area, Doi Suthep, sits on a hill overlooking the city. Wat Pra Singh is the main temple within the old city walls.
For ruins, go down to Sukhothai.
Question by Stacey: Thailand – shopping and partying!! Suggestions??
First time travellers from South Africa, Our aim is to shop and party. I was told that this would be cheap holiday, however I’m not sure how to plan it so that it will be. As we are two young girls we were told that we should book our hotels prior to leaving and that they should be at least 3 star??? So far we’ve been told to visit bangkok (4 shopping), Koh Samed, Koh Phi Phi and Koh pang yang?? However it seems quite costly to travel between these places!! Please could you help me with some suggestions, reagrding where we should be visiting, great places to shop and get suits tailor made that would be reasonably priced?? We will be travelling in December 2006 for 14 days?? Any help would be much appreciated – Thanks

Answer by Kuta Yes, Thailand is an amazing place for vacation and definitely value for money. Do make sure your hotels are 3-star though, although this should again be extremely reasonable. Food, weather, scenery, shopping, you name it, is cheap and affordable there and I am sure it is a holiday experience you will not forget. Just be careful of the ladyboys and shemales that look like proper ladies as it is often difficult to distinguish one from a real lady.
