Is a return ticket really necessary when travelling south america?

Question by dylanologist: Is a return ticket really necessary when travelling south ?
I’m soon going to South , and my starts in Venezuela. Now my understanding is that as a Maltese citizen i don’t require any Visa, however it seems as though a return/onward ticket is required. Since i will be traveling around South for around a year, and i don’t know what route im taking, purchasing a return ticket doesn’t really make sense to me… Does anybody know, from their own experience whether this will really be a problem? Thanks :)

Motorbike trip South america

Motorbike South
Video Rating: 5 / 5

www.clymer.com 800-262-1954 Footage from the South leg of Sjaak Lucassen on his 5 year adventure to travel around the world on an unlikely motorcycle a 2001 Yamaha R1. To make the motorcycle a serious adventure touring bike that could compete with well known motorcycles in the class including the BMW GS models and the Kawasaki KLR, the Yamaha R1 received extensive modifications including: adapted and strengthened sub frame to attach the top and two side trunks: placed an aluminum box in the space below the tank for a spare chain; placed a small rack on the steering stem to store the GPS; Van Wylick strengthened the aluminum stay fairing on both sides with 3 mm thick aluminum plates; joined the mirror supports underneath the fairing screen with a thick strip of aluminum to prevent vibration from breaking them; installed modified (5 cm shorter) Laser exhaust pipe so the exhaust wont blow against the spare Metzeler tires; installed a Cyclelok alarm with trunk protection; installed a Hyperpro steering damper; use fully synthetic Putoline oil; installed K&N air filter; installed Osco chain oiler; installed Fuelstar between the fuel pipe so lower octane fuel can be used; placed a 12 volt adapter to charge the video camera and laptop batteries; installed an on/off switch between the supply of the right headlight to save current and still drive with one light on; installed a relay for the extra brake lights in the side trunks; and of course there was a Clymer shop service

I am planning to travel to South America in August. Does anyone want to plan this trip with me?

Question by sg4578: I am to travel to South in August. Does anyone want to this with me?
So far I am alone but am a little nervous about traveling all over S. by myself. I am a college educated, 22 year old, male, white New Yorker. I want to start in Bogota Colombia and travel south to Peru, Brazil, Chile and Argentina. So far I have thought I would fly into Bogota and out of Buenos Aires four or so weeks later.

Does a like this interest any other American?

Does anyone have any tips to make this adventure safer and more fun?

I would rather have a travel companion to add to the safety of the , and also split costs like hotel rooms or car rentals.

Has anyone done something like this and have knowledge to share? Even if you have specific information on one region in South I would love to hear your input.

Thanks everyone!

Awesome dude!
I would be so down for that except that I am in the middle of major projects for work…..I was supposed to go to Egypt for 2 weeks but had to kill those plans…

I been to Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brasil and Colombia in South ….

Please be careful in my beautiful home country of Colombia…..I am glad you want to go there……and I am sure you won’t leave disappointed but it potentially can be dangerous depending where you decide to go …especially if u to travel out of the country by land or boat….

I suggest you fly out of Colombia……If your is to go to Amazonian capital Leticia….then take a boat to Iquitos in Peru…..not sure how safe it is but it may be a better option…..I would look into that…..(getting to Leticia is by plane only).

There will be parts of South that are a bit shady….but one thing South Americans are is very friendly….

There are very obvious tourist attractions….one of my favorites was on the boarder of Paraguay, Brasil and Argentina….Waterfalls (Foz de Iguacu) and the Itapu Dam(largest in the world).

Ending your in Buenos Aires. is a good ending stop….you can check out Uruguay….(Colonia de Saramento or Montevideo) while you stay in BA.

There is a lot one can do in South …..

Not sure about the order……Colombia…..to Peru…..Chile…to Argentina and end in Brasil….seems like the most logical order…..Unless you cross through Bolivia and Paraguay..to Brasil….you can end your in Santiago, Chile..

Look into “packaged” tickets from TAM, LAN or even TACA airlines and their associates and figure out how much it would cost you to but a x number of 1 way tickets to these locations….(Like a Round the World Ticket)…but for just the immediate area……They would normal allow you to fly with airlines within the same Alliance (Like One World and Star Alliance)…..give that into consideration because South is big….and 4 weeks seems like a short time to enjoy everything ……not rush…..Bad part about flying is the Airport Tax one needs to pay every time u fly internationally.

Good Luck!
