there is going to be two of us going. we have a somewhat limited budget. we probably want to stay 1.5-2 weeks. we would like something close to the slopes. the person going with me has only skied twice, so slopes that have a lot of mild skiing

Why settle to ski at South America when the North has so much to offer? Anyways, you might want to look at Chile and Argentina for this one.

I think that you should consider Las Lenas in Argentina and Portillo in Chile. These are the biggest and most famous resorts in South America. I think Portillo is fairly close to Santiago which would make the transportation issue much easier, while Las Lenas might have hostels/dormitory type lodging so you could save some money there.
From what I’ve read and seen on Warren Miller movies, these resorts are both above tree-line so they close down during storms.
