Here in the Brazil students they offer to work in ship and they travel free and they still earn wage.
The absolute cheapest way is to walk but cisne has an excellent suggestion. If you can find passage as a peon on a cargo ship do it.
You can bus through Mexico to southern Panama, take a ship ride past the Darian Gap to Colombia and then travel most of SA by bus. Buses in Central and South America are the most common mode of long distance travel and range from luxury, air conditioned, inflight movies type to the infamous “chicken bus” that stops at every wide spot in the road, but is dirt cheap.
