What is the best place to visit in Mexico or South America?

Question by SFolds: What is the best place to visit in Mexico or South America?
I’m trying to plan an affordable week-long vacation in late December, right after Christmas, for me and my boyfriend. He speaks passable Spanish. We are fairly active and enjoy walking around, exploring. We also like to try new foods and are interested in cultural/historical museums and sites.
I would prefer to stay in one place and have the ability to take day trips to nearby cultural/natural/historical attractions activities. Being by a beach is a plus, and relative safety is a must.
Thanks!

Chichen Itza, Mexico. That’s where all the Mayan ruins are. At least, I think it’s Mayan. And, it’s on the Yucatan Peninsula, so you’re sure to be near some beaches.

Macchu Picchu, Cuzco, Peru, definitely a place you must go!!! For lots of reasons :The many cultural places and all their meanings, it has this magical magnetism that you just don’t get enough by visiting for a short period of time. Incredible place to visit. I do recommend it to you with a good planning on everything with up to 6 months in advance.
