UK citizen – Entering South American countries with children?

Question by Nico: UK citizen – Entering South American countries with children?
I am going on holiday to Ecuador and Peru, and maybe other South American countries, with my teenage children. Their father’s name is not on the birth certificate (this is quite usual in England these days). Has anyone travelled like this? Did you have any problems at immigration when you arrived? I have legal passports, and all documents needed – but some countries say they need a notarised letter from the other parent. Is this necessary even when his name is not on the birth certificate and he is not in the picture?
(Please don’t write polemics against single parents – this is a genuine question!)

Ecuador has this requirement for children born in ecuador and leaving the country, but not for foreign children visiting Ecuador. See 1st website and read under Entry Requirements. See second website and scroll down to paragph on Entry requirements also. it recommends you check with the Peruvian Embassy about single parent travel. That is prob. the only way you will get an answer. Some travel agents are very knowledgeable and might know, but the embassy would be the best source of info. Of course, if there is any way yu could obtain such a letter to carry, that would be great. Or if you have a court order or court issued document stating that you have sole custody. Also, in some countries if the children are over 14, this letter is not required. See 3rd webste for Consulate of Peru in London so you may contact them with your question. Hope you can get the info you need and have a great trip.
