Travel : Trip 100 : South America, Argentina – Hike on the Martial Glacier
Movie recorded during a hike to the Martial Glacier near the town of Ushusia, Argentina, on a trip to South America and Antarctica in February/March 2011. Ushuaia is one of the main tourist centers of the Tierra del Fuego Province and is one of the most visited spots in Southern Argentina. It is also the main port/staging post for Expedition Cruise ships departing for Antarctica. The Martial Glacier is about a 7 km walk from the town of Ushuaia. There is a chairlift/ski slope that takes you to the base of the Martial mountain chain, from where there are numerous walks upto the 1100 meters mark where the Martial Glacier ice fields begin. On the day of my hike, as you can see in the Movie I had to take abit of a ‘leap of faith’ with the weather as it was very foggy early in the morning. However, the luck was with me as the clouds/mist cleared when I near on the summit and i was able to enjoy great mountain views as well as panoramic views over the Beagle Channel down below.

The hike to Machu Picchu was long, hard and pretty much vertical. Looking back, I should have counted the steps. Not only did we walk to the entrance, we also hiked up to the peak of Huayna Picchu, as well as all the way to the Sun Gate where people enter from the Inca trail. This adventure was filmed during one of Intrepid Travel’s tours of Peru. South America was breathtaking, the Andes, the rainforest, the ruins… amazing. Peru is a country everyone has to visit.

@RainforestExplorer97 Looks like you’ve got to head back to Peru sometime! I liked the Amazon just as much!
@Jimplicit The morning took us 40 minutes of straight steps. The guide told us it was a “walk” but then later admitted he only told us that so we wouldn’t get discouraged. Smart Guy. Huayna Picchu was an extra 25 minutes of climbing. It was more of a stone ladder than anything, the steps were pretty much vertical. Anyways worth it though. The experience of walking through something as big as Machu Picchu, then seeing it the size of a basket ball from above was incredible
I would love to see Machu Picchu up close. That must have been quite a hike up that mountain. How long did it take to get to the peak?
Very good.
wow this is great footage! I would love to go!
