I was recently made redundant (laid off) and I have some money in the bank. I’m not married, no house, not even a car payment, so I don’t have any strings. I’m thinking about taking a long holiday. Maybe as long as a year. I would like to hear about inexpensive places I can go. What ideas do you have? I’m thinking Asia, Africa, or South America, but I don’t really know specific places.

Why not try Indonesia, with places like Bali, Java and Sumatra. Bali is only a short flight from Western Australia (Perth) it’s closer to Perth then Sydney is.
Think about visa’s, travel insurance and transport when deciding where to go, these things may add quite a bit of expense to your budget, also you will need a return ticket so work out your itinerary carefully flying into and out of the same airport will be a lower cost then fling into one place and out of another.
