Q&A: Tips or recommendations for purchasing a vehicle and traveling by road through South America?

Question by redlisse: Tips or recommendations for purchasing a vehicle and traveling by road through South America?
I am planning a big trip around South America – Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela and more, and am planning on buying a van to travel around with a couple of friends and to sleep in. Would you recommend this as a way to travel in the region or is it much more expensive / dangerous / difficult than hiking / camping / staying in hostels and traveling by bus?

Here in Uruguay is safe but i wouldn’t recommend you to drive at night in Argentina and Brasil. I don’t know anything about Peru and Venezuela
