Q&A: South America tours?

My bf and I are thinking about going to Argentina, Brazil, and Chile in either March or April for about 2~3 wks. Is it ‘safe’ to go travel on our own? or it’s better to do ‘guided/escorted tours’ (it will be our first time to go s. america) any recommendation for the tours? Thank you~

it is safe, would be good if you could speak spanish (portuguese)
