Question by grape: skiing in august in south america..help?10pts (:?
so, I am looking for a good place to skii in august, and i have heard that south america has really great places. I have only been skiing in Colorado, and I have always loved all the runs there. is there anywhere in south america similar to there? like with the tree runs too? sorry, I know I am being picky! and I am a good skier, (not olympic, but i can do blacks in CO) so they can be a little challenging! Please and thank you!!

Chile gets my vote – Portillo or Valle Nevado

  2. You might also consider the South Island of New Zealand. Do some research about tours for ski trips.

I skied in New Zealand, beautiful country but the ski areas are on the smaller side, but there are lots of them. South America can just be ridiculously expensive.

New Zealand has no trees on their mountains at all, and almost all South American areas are above treeline. In Chile, Valle Nevado is one of 3 ski areas (the others are El Colorado and another I forgot) right next to each other, and they’re the biggest and most amazing, with heli skiing and 17,000ft mountains in the background. They’re also pretty darn expensive, but you get the most skiing. They’re probably about the size of Breck all together

Portillo is in Chile, it’s about the size of Wolf Creek/ a bit bigger than Arapahoe Basin. Odds are Portillo will have the best snow and probably the best runs, the problem is it’s not super big and it’s extremely isolated so you can’t exactly jump over to town when you’re done skiing, there’s only a hotel there.

in Argentina Las Lenas or Bariloche (aka Cerro Catedral) are your best bets. Las Lenas has the most acres of skiing in Argentina, but not great snow.

Cerro Catedral is your best bet I think. It’s the only one I’ve mentioned with trees (and the only one worth mentioning)

    here’s a map:

as you can see, it’s not a huge area, but it’s not isolated, there’s a town at the bottom, and it’s not going to be a whiteout in a storm.

Personally, I think New Zealand’s south island, around Queenstown or Wanaka makes for a better adventure, and they speak english (or at least their version lol)

  4. Ski New Zealand.

I have been to Portillo 4 times. Every time we were blessed with incredible amounts of fresh powder. All above tree line, so it’s really difficult to see on a cloudy/stormy day.

    Malam Jabba(Pakistan)
the Malam Jabba Ski Resort, owned by the Pakistani Tourism Development Corporation, had a ski slope of about 800m with the highest point of the slope 2804m (9200 ft) above sea level. Malam Jabba Ski Resort was the joint effort of the Pakistan government with its Austrian counterpart. The resort was equipped with modern facilities including roller/ice-skating rinks, chair lifts, skiing platforms, telephones and snow clearing equipment.
