im 17 and i really want to travel. My friends are really awkward about traveling so i want to go on my own. the problem is that i want to be safe. i was wondering if anyone knows of any organizations for lone travelers around this age where people go in groups.

Laura I admire your ambition for travel at such a young age. You will certainly have a life full of expeditions and stories to be admired by all.
The answer to your question is yes, there are several organizations that offer exactly what your looking for. I can’t supply you names as I don’t know if your in Canada or USA or what part of North America. Here in Canada we have many opportunity for mission travel. eg; Costa Rica – Canada Foundation here you can volunteer to go to Costa Rica and volunteer to help there economy by helping less fortunates build homes or perhaps teaching english (most common). You may find this site helpfull http://www.i-to-i.com/ and click on trips. I find them a little expensive but it is a start.
