everywhere can be dangerous if you go to the bad parts. rio has its good and bad parts but if you’re going to south america i would suggest buenos aires in argentina, it’s a very nice country and the city is amazing.

The safest places in south america are Chili, Ecuador, Peru ,Argentina
I have been to Brazil and Rio, but I must say that it is safe, go in larger groups at night.stay on the main streets, keep all your belonging with you, don’t carry any thing with value.

  2. I think you should go to Colombia Bogota the capital its beautifull I lived there until I was 9 now I’m 27 and was down there this past summe night life is fun lasts all night and I mean all night nature is beautifull mounatins people are friendly and live dont go to the central alone do and never cary to much money with you one dollar is worth two so trust me its great

  3. Depends entirely what you want to do! Southern Argentina for hiking, Peru for ancient historical culture, Rio/Buenos Aires for partying, Bolivia for natural wonders. Obviously there’s far more to it than that!

As for the question about danger – we met several female solo travellers when we were in South America who had had no trouble. Most problems can be avoided by keeping one’s wits about one; wear a money belt, don’t carry too many valuables with you, don’t flash expensive cameras/phones/etc around the place, avoid dark shadowy alleys and be particularly careful if you’ve had a few drinks.

So Brazil, my roomate actually lived there for a couple years with her family. Ive heard many stories. Some about how the brazilian boys are the nicest but others about how dangerous it is. Apparently Brazil, she was from Sao Paulo, has many kidnappings. And it isnt any geek off the street. These people know who has money and who doesnt. Thats wat all the kidnappings are for, randsoms. Don’t flash any money or wealth to anyone. Not even the police. I asked my roomate about what the police were doing about it. And she quickly shouts the police are behind all of this. They are extremly corrupt.

Caracas HAHAA, just stay outta of there if your american.
Go to buenos aires, argentina. one of my friends visit there often because she is argentinian. Probably the safest in south america.
Chile = no because of the natural disaster, still has things shaken up
Peru = makes me think, unsafe.

South America’s personality is a lot better than the media makes it seem like it is. As the first answer said, anywhere in the world is dangerous if you go to the wrong places and do the wrong things. I’ve lived in Rio de Janeiro for 14 years and never once have I been robbed, assaulted or had any problems with crime. Rio de Janeiro is a very wealthy and beautiful city with friendly people. The reason many people think of Rio as “OMG U GET KILLED IF U GO THAR !!11!!1ONE!!” is because of the media and mainly our favelas, aka slums. These favelas are where almost all the violence in Rio happens, but they are often isolated on top of hills with a few exceptions. If you take the right precautions such as: Not looking like a complete tourist, don’t go to shady places like favelas, creepy alleys. Don’t carry too much money in your pocket and don’t leave your stuff alone. If you are smart, Rio can prove to be the trip of your life.

To answer the other questions, I’d say the safest place in South America would be Chile, in cities such as Santiago and the small towns in the beautiful Patagonia. And no, Caracas is not the most dangerous city on earth.
