Hummingbirds of Canada ~ Never seen this many before!!!

There are nearly 300 species of hummingbirds, all of them found only in South America, Central America, the Caribbean and North America. Their migration is an epic journey of 4000 miles or more round trip and in the summer they can be found as far north as Alaska. Their diet is of insects and nectar from plants, no other bird can hover or fly backwards. Their high rate of metabolism requires a heart beat of up to 200 beats per minute which they slow to 35 beats a minute during roosting at night. “When active they can more than double their heart beat to 500 per minute. Compared to a robin who has a heart beat of about 30 per minute.” I love these little birds, one of natures wonders.

@ronsig thx!! This was filmed at Christina Lake, BC, Canada. And I would love to see the Bee Hummer. We had plans to go to the National Park to see them, when we were last in Cuba. Then Tropical Storm Noel came in and everything was shut down and we were evacuated! A different kind of excitement!

I love this video. Where was it taken?
I did see the bee hummingbird in Cuba once. It was even smaller than ours here. We only get the rubythroated in Ontario.

Amazing video, thanks for posting. The hummers here can’t stand to share the yard, let alone eat at the feeders together. They are constantly warring. I guess Canadian hummers are more tolerant of each other! ;)

Excellent video, I see hummers in my yard occasionally. Thanks!

@JCVdude Lol yeah! :D I hope they come before the winter comes :(

@JCVdude I read that info on wikipedia so when I read your comment I knew I could have been mistaken since wiki isn’t always 100% accurate. But no problem man, I know you probably got confused somewhere like everyone else does sometimes, me included. Dude I hope you get to go to Cuba and interact with these creatures on a personal level. I live in Sweden so it’s kind of a long way for me and it wouldn’t my first priority but still. I would probably go to Australia if I could afford it lol.

@JCVdude oops not bumblebee, just bee as you said. I had insects on my mind . . . lol

@LovingPinkLibra thanks so much! the ants can become quite a problem for sure. Agree with the bleck! :)

@lordabomity The bumble-bee hummer is the smallest & lives in Cuba. We had arranged to go to a Nature Reserve to see them (apparently they land on your hand) & our plans had to be cancelled. We had to be evacuated from our resort due to a tropical storm and everything was closed down for tours etc. Quite exciting but missed seeing the birds. :(

  20. JCVdude Jul 6th 2011

@Myobokuuzan Just think how exciting it will be when the first one comes!

@Sylviascloud The hummies at Cindy’s Mom’s definitely have one little guy we’ve named ‘Spike’ who is dominant & owns one of the feeders. Let’s the others feed at the second feeder. All of our equip is SONY. The vid camera is the HDR-HC9.

I Love hummingbirds, great Video, and wonderful clear color, I can watch them forever. I had to move my feeder from a tree I had it hooked up too, because there were so many ants on it & the hummingbirds were feeding & shoving the ants into the bottle. Bleck!! LOL

Do you have any idea how small these birds actually are? It’s an amazing and a beautiful creature. The smallest hummingbird is the bee hummingbird, and it weighs only 1.8 grams!! LOL
