How much did you spend backpacking South America?

Question by nickjames_88: How much did you spend backpacking South America?
Basically wanting details on which countries you visited, how long you visited, and how much you spend in total. And gossip about the countries is fine too.

Spent 2000 dollars on brasil, argentina, paraguay, uruguay and chile. Went there for a month with a friend. I left my main baggage with a family in buenos aires and took a small baggage for my excursions. Tipically i would take a bus to some city, tour it for 2 days and then left for another city. I returned to buenos aires about 3 times to get money and clothes.

Brasil: Its like venezuela.

Argentina: Gray and depressing since i went during the crisis. Meat and clothes were cheap, the south was beautiful.

Uruguay: Argentina lite.

Chile: More expensive than argentina. Santiago was gray and boring, the andes mountains and the south were great. Lots of snow, lakes and sky.

Paraguay: Paraguay has probably the worst tours of south america. Asuncion is ugly and boring.

I budgeted for about $2000 a month and travelled all around South America.

I stayed in $10+ a night hotels and guesthouses.

Travel was by coach and that was very cheap but LONG hours. Occasionally I caught an internal flight because it was a similar price. Avoid trains for safety reasons.
