Holiday in Galapagos – short break advice needed!!!?

Question by ants_toes_knees: in – short needed!!!?
I like planning my own holidays instead of being ripped off by travel agents plus i dont like being rounded up and shuffled around by tour companies on package tours….

Anyway,
I want to visit the islands for only a couple of days and would like to know what the best plan would be…

Do i fly to Equador and book hotel there (if yes then where is best?)

Once in Equador, are there any arranged trips to the islands that i can book locally?

I really want to see the Islands but without the package element and i only wish to spend a total of a week for the whole ….

Your help is greatly received.

Cheers
Ant

I expect you can fly there, find a hotel and a travel group for the island trip. You may want to reserve the island trip before you go as only a certain number get to go, although you may find cancellations at the last minute. It is a shame to go all that way for only a week. I went for 3 weeks and hopped aroung central and south america.

I usually share your sentiment about not wanting to book packaged tours, however The Galapagos has been the exception for me. You will in all probability fly to the Galapagos from Guayaquil onto one of the 2 main islands. You can certainly book day excursions from one of these ports (or on the mainland I am sure), but part of the charm of the islands is living aboard a small vessel for at least 4 nights.

I would make sure you research all of the islands before you go, because they all have different wildlife. When you are going for as short a time as you are, I think you will want to prioritize to avoid missing the your must sees.

In summary, avoid the day trips, because you will not be able to see some of the far reaching islands. Here is a good website to start your research: http://www.hillmanwonders.com/galapagos/galapagos_islands.htm#_vtop
