What ya all think of the Norway seed bank?

Question by darse: What ya all think of the Norway seed bank?
I saw where Norway has spent billions in making a seed bank in the Arctic. I was wondering what others may think of it. Would it be possible they are counting on a pole shift that they believe would place the Arctic in a position that would have a climate were they would be able to grow food. Also there are all these underground government bunkers all over the place. You all think they know something that they are not telling us because there is not enough space to save everyone so we will be left in the aftermath. Just looking for thoughts.

Its a dooms day failsafe. The idea is that in case of environmental disaster, they would have enough seeds to re-grow the plants that exist today.

Personally, I think that the money could have been better spent elsewhere. A fraction of that amount could life an entire third world country over the poverty line.

As for military tendencies, I do not think that any Scandinavian country, after the age of the Vikings, has harbored expansionist policies, so do not worry.

“Would it be possible they are counting on a pole shift that they believe would place the Arctic in a position that would have a climate were they would be able to grow food”

Nope. The seeds are kept in the Arctic at a low temperature to ensure low metabolic activity which will cause a delay in the aging of the seeds. The permafrost surrounding the facility will help maintain the low tempeture of the seeds if the electricity supply should fail.

  3. The seed bank exists, but the rest sounds like something from the movie “2012″.

  4. all it is really, is an insurance policy if you will. It’s basically in case the earth essentially ends (not really but close enough to something like that) they would be able to go there, and have seeds to be able to plant food.

I doubt the seeds are meant to grow there at any point.

It’s a noble effort, but I want to know…should something happen to the world and probably much of humanity, who do they really think will get up there to get the supply?

They’re keeping them in Norway to preserve the seeds in the cold without using man-made energy just in case of a doomsday. It seems like a viable rescue mission if there are still enough people left on the planet afterwards. Not saying the world is going to end, but if it did, this is a good idea.

    Just in case.

  8. They are doing this in case of some apocalypse where global warming is involved. At least that’s what I heard on the discovery channel. Once it happens the remaining survivors will find a way to sail to the island (I think it’s called Svalbard or something) and regrow the plants and rebuild civilization. Not a bad idea, but how will the survivors find where the doomsday vault is? If it gets underwater, how will they retrieve the seeds?

I think this is great news. though I am not quite sure of what a seed bank is…

    IT’S THE END OF DAYS…..!!!
Or it could just be an attempt to preserve domesticated seeds in case of a global catastrophe – of which the threat is actually VERY real, just not publicly expressed for obvious reasons!
If not by our own hands, then it’s the threat of another meteor wiping out most life on the planet, as has happened five times before in Earths history. We’re apparently overdue another one, so maybe that’s why there’s recently been so much effort made to create and stock this ‘Ark’? It certainly looks built to withstand catastrophic events!
It’s quite possible that something’s either on the way or the polar shift will happen all of a sudden(unlikely, looking at the data from previous known polar shifts) and the ‘Powers that Be’ know about it. You’re right – there would be no way to save us all, so to tell everyone it’s about to happen would be foolish and would only impede those who know about it and are hoping to survive it, so they wouldn’t.

Ke serra serra, I say. I might get killed crossing the road tomorrow so I’d better enjoy life now!

Norway spent 9 million, which isn’t exactly billions, at least around here supermarkets cost more to build than that.

Anyway, the entire point in the location is the cold. If there was a pole shift, the entire project would be ruined and only a small fraction of the contents would be remotely useful. The point is to maintain biodiversity.
