What are my options for car from UK to Norway or Sweden with 4 people.?

Question by boneless: What are my options for car from UK to Norway or Sweden with 4 people.?
I am going on holiday to northern Europe. I am planning ton start in Norway or Sweden then drive down to Germany (Koln). I am interested in taking my car with me. What options do I have to get my car to Norway or Sweden (along with 4 people). I am particularly interested in the cheapest option.

There are no direct ferry lines operating from the UK to Norway, but you can go on the DFDS Tor Line cargo routes from Tilbury or Immingham to Gothenburg, which is close enough. It’s not exactly cheap, but neither is driving all the way from Calais to Norway! Around £650 for 2 adults, 2 children & a car.

Alternatively, there is a ferry line from Harwich to Esbjerg, Denmark (western Jutland), with DFDS Seaways. Summer fares are anything from around £450 – £950. Color Line run ferry lines from Hirtshals (Northern Jutland) to Larvik and Kristiansand, the latter costs around £50 for a car + 4 people. If you do want to see that part of Denmark, it’s a good shortcut to Norway, otherwise I wouldn’t bother.

The shortest and most convenient route from Southern Sweden to Cologne is via Copenhagen to Rødby catching a ferry to Puttgarden. There is a longer route through Denmark (+200 kms), but additional petrol and another toll bridge makes it worthwhile only if you want to visit that part of Denmark anyway.

You might of course consider going across the English Channel and via Germany on the outward journey, too, taking the same route back.

You might want to consider flying into Gothenburg with Ryanair as the flights will most likely be increadibly cheap, and invest the money in a rental car with free mileage, which may work if the rental company allows you to return the car in Germany and fly home from there. I’m assuming that a rental car would be much cheaper to hire in Sweden than in Norway at any rate.
