Can I get into Finland with a 1 way ticket?

Question by Daniel Barber: Can I get into Finland with a 1 way ticket?
I saw a ‘Border Security’ show on tele last night. A man was denied into England for holiday for 3 months because he only had £1500 and no return ticket.

I am going to Finland in December of 2010 with a 1 way ticket. I didn’t have enough money to purchase a return ticket for an extra 0. I need the extra money to stay in Finland as I am getting married and then applying for a Residency Permit on the basis of having a spouse in Finland. I am allowed to stay there for 3 months without a Visa (I am from Australia). When I apply for my Residency Permit I will be allowed to stay until a decision is made on my application (they take my passport so I can’t leave anyway). This is why I need the extra money, so I don’t go broke while I am waiting for a decision as I can’t work I need funds to support myself for the amount of time it may take.

My question is, will I come into any sort of trouble when I enter Finland? I have 2900€ in my bank (00) is this enough to keep Border Security off my back because it’s enough to purchase a return ticket if I need to? Will they send me back if I am honest and say that I am going to marry and wish to pursue a life in Finland? I will be taking 22Kg of Luggage with me. My friends have told me I wont come into any trouble as long as I have proof of funds to be able to buy a ticket back. I am confused because I don’t know if you need 3000€ for the 3 months Holiday + Money for a return, if that is the case I don’t have enough…

Thanks so much for any help.

Hmm.. Hard to say, if you intend to enter the country as a tourist, which technically would be your case, they usually ask for a return ticket.

Once I wanted to board to Frankfurt, and I had not printed my return ticket. The lady from the airline did not want to let me check-in because she said Frankfurt customs would not let me in without a return ticket. So I had to run around the airport to find a computer where I could print my return ticket to show it to her, and then she let me check-in. However, upon arrival in Frankfurt, the customs guy didn’t even ask for the return ticket.

So, in a nutshell, to comply with the regulations you really should have a return ticket, otherwise they may send you back, on the other hand, you might just get lucky and they don’t ask for it.
