Any interrailing advice with regards to Sweden and Finland?

Question by Jon: Any interrailing advice with regards to Sweden and Finland?
I’m planning to go inter-railing in September and and really want to see Sweden and Finland. I was thinking of going from Malmo on the train right up to Lapland and then back down through Finland eventually ending up at Helsinki.

a) What’s the best/cheapest way to get to Sweden from mainland Europe, boat or train? Would this be via Denmark?

b) What’s the best way to get back onto mainland Europe from Helsinki and where would I end up?

c) Is it worth travelling all the way up to Lapland? Where else should I see along the way?

Any advice or information would be very much appreciated!

Thanks x

a) I don’t know what country you’re coming from, but the cheapest way to get around is often by budget airline. Try Skyscanner for checking flight prices. I don’t think Ryanair flies to Malmö anymore, so you may have to search flights to Denmark, then cross by train or bus.

There are a few ferries (from Denmark, Germany, Finland, Poland and the Baltic countries). Train would be fairly cheap if you’re already in Denmark, but otherwise I think flight would still be cheaper.

Swedish train company and another helpful train site:

b) There’s a ferry from Helsinki to Rostock, Germany. It’s not running at the moment, but it’s supposed to come back at the end of April. Otherwise, there’s an overnight ferry to Stockholm where you could back-track, or you can fly.

c) Lapland is beautiful and desolate, and I think worth seeing. Depends on the time of year and your interests to recommend what to see. If you edit your question, I can offer some recommendations, or Wikitravel has good city and area guides.
