Q&A: When are the school holidays in Bergen, Norway?

Question by Ronold: When are the school holidays in Bergen, Norway?
Me and my partner are planning a little to the great city of Bergen this year from June the 14th to the 17th, are we likely to be going right in the middle of the school holidays?

Not that it would really matter, just curious.

Thanks for your help :)

How to power holiday display?

Question by jrasche2003: How to power holiday display?
I have a small holiday display that I put up which consists of animatronic deer, polar bear and a holiday train. I only have one outdoor outlet which is GCFI in the back of the house. In order to run my lights I use outdoor thick green extension cords, but because I dont want cords draped along the driveway, I have them going through the gutter. I do beleive there are two 25 foot cables connected in the gutter, which run down, and I use several more of the green extentions to power everything in the yard.
My question is: When it snows no problem.. but when it rains (which the last couple xmas in minnesota were warm and rainy), they pop the GFCI, and I have to wait maybe 2-3 days after the rain stops to turn them back out or it just trips.
What do you think is causing this? Is there a better way to power all of these?
Any help you can provide is appreciated, because I have been very disapointed, and I really am thinking of selling my stuff and not decorating again…..
Thanks

Answer by mdesertbound
Ahhhhhh yes, The holiday decorarting in snow & rain.
I’m in the desert now!
We used to run our extension cord out to a power stake (the one’s with three outlets & timer). I could cover it with a zip lock bag and a close it up with a twist tie at the base. We did the same at all extension cord to extension cord connections. This way no water gets at the connections to the GFI.

Axl Rose tries Dublin’s patience, sends crowd home
Axl Rose, it seems, needs a little more patience — and a much louder alarm clock. The 48-year-old singer of U.S. hard-rock band Guns N’ Roses irritated thousands of his Dublin fans at the 02 Arena on Wednesday night by showing up nearly an hour late — a recurring problem on his band’s European tour — and then walking off after an unruly minority in the crowd hurled water bottles on the stage.

Japan is targeting endangered whales in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary and Sea Shepherd will not stand by while whales die. With our ship, the Steve Irwin and a dedicated crew of 41 international volunteers, the Whales’ Navy, under the command of founder and president, Captain Paul Watson, will uphold and enforce international conservation regulations on the high seas against the Japanese whaling fleet’s self imposed quota of 935 piked whales, 50 endangered humpback whales and 50 endangered fin whales in the Southern Oceans. The campaign is named in honor of Migaloo, the only known albino humpback in the world. This year, with the sights of the ruthless Japanese harpooners set square on the endangered humpbacks, Migaloo and all of his family are under imminent threat of death at the hands of Japanese pirate whalers. As the relentless Japanese whalers seek to hunt down and kill Migaloo and his family, Sea Shepherd will be hunting the whalers with the firm objective of intervention against their illegal activities. “I did not establish the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as a protest organization,” said Captain Watson. “I have not gone to sea over all these years to simply bear witness to the atrocities that whalers

Helsinki is beautiful, and Turku is also. Tampere is a nice university town with friendly folk. If you like the outdoors, go north, to towns such as Ivalo north of the Artic Circle. Finland is a great place to visit. I lived a year there and loved it. Most people in bars/discos are open to new people.

Why not move Australia Day?

Question by Flavian Hardcastle: Why not move Australia Day?
To me 26 January marks the arrival of the First Fleet of the Colony of New South Wales. I live in South Australia.

Australia didn’t exist as Federation until 1st January 1901.

Thus, I think that would be a more appropriate time to celebrate Australia, but there’s just one problem ……..

There’s already too many public holidays in the early part of the year.

Couldn’t we just pick a random date at the end of the year, say, 11 Novemeber, and pretend it was the date that Australia broke off from the Antarctic? We do that with Christmas, as we don’t really know that the Baby Jesus was born on 25 December.

PS: Do I lack patriotism?
Rebeka the reality is the current generation aren’t the ones who landed on Botany Bay either. So why celebrate 26 Jan?
aussiegirl_aka_shygirl but how is the establishment of the Colony NSW part of my history? I’m not in NSW.

… at you! Ha! It just keeps cumming… anyone who can get all these is truly a demi-God at the level of R&P user King Crimson.
Darth, c’mon. Do you really think I’d get so worked up about… HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU ONLY GIVE TRANSATLANTIC A 6! YOU FUCKING… just kidding. But do The Beach Boys really get a 0? :P
You’ve really heard Astral Project, Darth? I didn’t expect anyone to have heard them. They don’t even have a wiki. :P
Dammit Libby! I was going to put Kayak, Ange AND Giles, Giles, & Fripp, but I ran out of room! :P

Stumped you with 5bridgeS though. STUMPED YOU ALL! :P

I’ve heard of Current ’93 too, I guess I’ll look into it. It is my duty.
Yes Libby, that would be biblical.
Libby, if you do that, you will get BA. :P Unless someone else does it too, with the artists laid out nice and easy to read. :P
I’ll see what my Crimson magic can do about that bubble bath, Libby. It’s a bit rusty… those chains of prison moons and whatnot. :P
One more God-like edit, in which I give my ratings for the bands… AND ANSWER MY BQS! I will have truly conquered Y!A if I pull this off… ok, it’ll be more than one edit. :P

holidays in Iceland?

Question by Fin12: holidays in ?
Hey, im just wondering has anyone gone on holidays in , im thinking of going there next summer, whats it like, is it expensive, i live in ireland so can you get flights from ireland to ,

Best answer:

Answer by Sundancer
It is very expensive, because almost everything has to be imported. They grow some vegetables and of course have a big fish industry and lots of sheep, but that`s about it.
But it is definitely worth a visit, wonderful nature, very friendly and highly educated people, rich history and Reykjavik has a (weekend) nightlife, which is hard to match.
Just bring along enough money or be prepared to live on crab/lamb sandwiches, tomatoes, bananas and kiwis for a while ;-)

Which part of Greenland a good place to live and where to look for housing?

Question by Michelle Steel: Which part of Greenland a good place to live and where to look for housing?
I’m thinking of moving country to Green land (i had a many dreams about it) seems nice i want to take a holiday there soon and i was wondering if somebody can help me.

Best answer:

Answer by zafir
You don’t state which country you come from and that will determine whether or not you can move to Greenland. If you’re from an EU country, then you can move to Greenland with no problems. But if you’re from a country such as the US, you can only visit Greenland as a tourist and stay for a maximum of 90 days.

Greenland might seem ‘nice’ but it’s extremely cold with only a short summer, not the sort of place I’d want to move to! The population is 56,000, and the majority of these people live on the ice-free Western coastline. The official language is Greenlandic. Even if you find you are allowed to move to Greenland, your biggest problem will be finding work as, not only does it have a very small population, you will need to speak either Greenlandic or Danish to get any sort of job.

If you really want to follow this up, then contact the Danish Embassy in your country for more information.

Question by Ravim: I am planning to visit Helsinki in mid August for about 4 days. Pls suggest places around Helsinki? Lapland?
Is there enough to see in Helsinki for 4 days? Should I also include to Stockholm (by ferry) or to Lapland?

Best answer:

Answer by cantilena91
Greetings from Finland! Well, Lapland is nearly 1000 kilometres away from Helsinki, so I doubt that you could find that much time for all that travelling. But, your plan to visit Stockholm by a ferry is much more reasonable thing to do, so I suggest you to choose that and leave Lapland for later time. As for sightseeing in Helsinki, yes, it should have enough to see for you if you like museums, churches, and other cultural places, but there are plenty of nightclubs too if you like to be a nightfly!

What others holidays are associated wth animals?

Question by Gemini23: What others holidays are associated wth animals?
Easter is almost here and in any store I got to it’s plasterd with stuffed bunny rabbits and marshmallow ducks. Why do we associate bunnies and ducks with Easter, and what other holidays celeberate animals or use them as symbols?

Best answer:

Answer by Lauren R
Easter coincides with pagan celebrations celebrating the return of spring (the equinox), which makes sense since both are centered around the idea of rebirth. Since pagans were more into animism than deism, their worship is symbolized in baby animals instead of more religious symbols. As for the last one, Halloween has pretty strong connections with black cats and other animals that could be considered witches’ familiars…kind of weak though.

Romantic break in lapland?

Question by Ashleigh :) : Romantic break in lapland?
i am looking into taking my boyfriend for a short break, like 2 nights to lapland. I really want to go for a winter break together, he has never been skiing or anything so i was looking for a bit of snow, not necessarily skiing.

i just want to go somewhere with a little christmas magic, lights, log cabins and christmas trees and a village community, not too isolated but not packed in the city.

ANY information about lapland, or your own experiences, places you stayed areas you went to etc i would be very grateful :) thankyou x

Best answer:

Answer by nodunromin
The Province of Lapland (Finnish: Lappi; Northern Sami: Lappi; Swedish: Lappland) is one of the Provinces of Finland. The municipalities in the province cooperate in a Regional Council, which also makes it the Region of Lapland. It borders the Province of Oulu and the Region of North Ostrobothnia in the south. It also borders to the Gulf of Bothnia, Norrbotten County in Sweden, Finnmark County and Troms County in Norway and to Murmansk Oblast in Russia. In some parts of the world, particularly Britain and Finland itself, it is considered the traditional home of Santa Claus (Joulupukki).

Question by tigersuit: When do the Aurora Borealis (northern lights) most vividly and frequently occur?
I’m planning a to northern Canada and Alaska and one of the things I’d most like to see are the northern lights. However, I can’t seem to find any solid info on a time of year when they are most likely to be seen or when they would be the most vivid. What would the best time of year to travel to Alaska/Canada to see them?

Best answer:

Answer by Emily C
They would be most vivid during an electromagnetic storm on the sun. Also, you would have to go in the winter during the long nights there, the aurora usually is poorly visible in the day

Top six countries with least corruption–Denmark, Sweden,NZ,Singapore,Finland,Switzerland,–best for holidays?

Question by Fins+Wings{8 – 88}: Top six countries with least corruption–Denmark, Sweden,NZ,Singapore,Finland,Switzerland,–best for holidays?
So that your is trouble-free, you make genuine friends and you would consider return visits?
Do you know any other country not listed here, most attractive for a hassle-free holiday?

Thanks for your opinions!

Best answer:

Answer by bla bla
When someone mentions corruption, I always equate that with governments or multi-national corporations and their dealings, but not really with the entire population of a country – so I’m not really sure what you mean by that.

If you take out the corruption part, and I base the answer on the second part of your question – well I see a lot of questions posted here about Denmark, Sweden & Finland, and see that many people have great holidays there, but when it comes to making life-long friends (or making friends when living there) then this is not an easy.

My experience in Finland & Denmark at least is that generally (and I dislike generalisations it has to be said) people are a little reserved and wait to pass judgement – calm & cautious. However when this barrier is let down, then they are very warm and loyal friends.

Generally speaking I would add Australia and Ireland to the list. Australians & the Irish are very open, friendly, positive people with a great sense of humour….. plus both countries have a lot to offer as a tourist destination.

A holiday to Greenland gives one the opportunity to see icebergs which are best seen in the Greenlandic iceberg zone. Here one gets to see the big icebergs which are being produced by the northern hemisphere is greatest glacier producer. This is a wilderness adventure which takes about three or four nights in the Jukkasjarvi forests. There are rustic lodges where one can sleep at as well as ice hotels which are quite adventurous.

where do the travel agents Tour operators get their holidays from?

Question by Tony S: where do the travel agents Tour operators get their holidays from?
I want to start my own travel agency and would like to knowwhere do the travel agents Tour operators get their holidays from and the cost price

Best answer:

Answer by Airpole.
First you get in touch with airlines and their representatives. Then you get your IATA credibility certification license.
You make a plan what places you want to service and start making contacts and arrangements with local tour operetta’s for accommodation allotments and prices per certain destination.
You make the appropriate calculations for air travel fares and b-and- b hotel allotments or any other services you will provide, you add your other expenses and add your own profit.

It is a complicated work that needs some expertise that can not be had by trial and error methods.
The best will be to work for a company, preferably in their traveling programming department and even then you will not be ready to start you own business. There a re schools that can prepare you up to a point but without actual working experience I would suggest to avoid any such venture unless you have a lot of monet to throw away.

Especially, for Greece more businesses close than open nowadays. Then you must not forget that internet has made almost anyone who can handle the web his own travel agent.

@ Jean-Michel. My answer is not as educated as yours. You are first hand involved in the industry. My meagre knowledge of the matter is through my brother who was for many years involved in the particular profession. He was a succesful tour operator in fairs and exhibitions.

Lapland trip?

Question by Emma: Lapland ?
I am planning a to Lapland next year-

We really want to go to the ice hotel (I have found that there is one in Norway- although not THE ice hotel- has anyone been?) and plan a dog sledding couple of days. The fjords in Norway also have an appeal..

Is there anywhere else that anyone could recommend? I have bought books to read, but I was wondering if anyone has been there or has any suggestions?

Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by The Informer
Hi.

I went to Lapland in Sweden last year. I visited the real Ice Hotel and spent a day on a dog sled tour.

The climax of the was seeing the Northern Lights crackling over head, which was an experience I’ll never forget.

Incidentally, the area around Kiruna has the best conditions for seeing the lights, so if this is something you want to do it’s a good place to visit.

We used http://www.activitiesinsweden.com and found them very helpful.

Good luck!

Question by Julia T: Could someone check my holiday related speaking answers?
Hi,
I have my speaking exam on monday, but I didn’t get a chance to ask my teacher to check over some of my answers. I think the basics for these are right, it’s just the grammar and smaller details and such. I just thought I’d get a second opinion to make sure I’m learning the right stuff (and I’m sure a GCSE level student shouldn’t really be trusted to get everything right).

These are my answers in , and the the english is below.

going to lapland?

Question by jen the fashion desiginer: going to lapland?
hi there, my husband booked a for us to go to lapland with the kids, and we can take them to see santa, now when he told me the first thing i thought was what were we gonna wear, because were used to a warm climate, and i have never been in climate where the degrees is well below 0, so i dont think me and my kids will be able to keep warm, so please help, ideally i would want to layer up several times over, but i dont know how to, and could you tell me what my daughter should wear also, as kids find the cold weather harder to deal with

Best answer:

Answer by jazjam♥
when the weather gets cold here(sometimes below zero)this is the routine:
after underclothes, the first layer is long-john’s(thermal underwear)
next a long sleeved t-shirt & jeans and 2 pairs of socks(or 1 heavy thermal pair)
then put on your scarf, a thick pair of gloves(or mittens for the kids), and a good winter hat.(a thick knit cap is great for keeping your ears warm)
next, the outerwear. the most important part.
for kids, i suggest a full snowsuit. you’ll want a heavy, warm coat. make sure that the snowsuit/coats have hoods that can fasten shut.(believe it or not, some don’t!) & when chosing which ones to buy, make sure they are lined or insulated. remember- if the material feels thin then it probably is and won’t keep you very warm. same with boots. make sure they are lined or insulated.
there are a lot companies that make thermal insulated coats & boots so you should have no problem finding them. i think that covers everything. any questions just e-mail me.
have a great !!!! :)

What should I do with the spare foreign currency I always have after trips or holidays to other countries?

Question by aanstalokaniskiodov_nikolai: What should I do with the spare foreign currency I always have after trips or holidays to other countries?
I don’t want to take bets about how much of it I can fit up my nose because that can only amuse me for a few weeks…I need from that. The stores won’t accept it; so, suggestions?

How do you find the Northern Lights in Reykjavik?

Question by AndreaJ: How do you find the Northern Lights in Reykjavik?
I am going on a 3 night break at the beginning of February to Reykjavik. My husband and I are renting a car for the time and really want to see the Northern Lights. Can anyone suggest a place where we could drive to in the evening to find the Northern Lights. We don’t really want to go on a pricey tour but we would like to find them on out own… any suggestions?

I was there and frankly, you just see them! You don’t really have to go anywhere.

Of course it is, otherwise there would not be so many charter flights coming in each winter! People travel there to meet Santa Claus at his official home, do snowmobile things and see the snow and reindeer for the very first time. Welcome to my home country Finland!
