When should I buy flights to Australia for August 2011?
Question by Janet Sash: When should I buy flights to Australia for August 2011?
My family (2 adults and a 10 year old boy) are hoping to visit Australia August 2011. We will be on a budget but would like to stop off on route via Hong Kong or Singapore, visit Sidney and the Great Barrier Reef/ Whitsunday Islands. Any tips or suggestions would be great. Thanks.

One presumes you are coming in from Europe/UK if you plan on stopping over in either Singapore or Hong Kong. If you’re coming from the States, you’ve gone too far – and will make the airfares unnecessarily expensive because of the additional travel.
In short, while August is low season in Australia (being the middle of our winter), it’s classified as high season in the northern hemisphere. In addition, Australian domestic airfares don’t really change that much from low season to high season. Obviously, they are more expensive in peak periods (such as Christmas, Easter, Melbourne Cup etc.), but for the rest of the year, they remain pretty steady. About all you can hope for is a price war between the airlines, and grabbing a cheap airfare then. About all you can really do is check out online travel services and check the options available.

It will make very little difference when you buy the tickets. What you need to do is shop around. Go to 2 or 3 travel agents and ask what they can do for you. They will all come up with a slightly different price and different airlines. Also go onto to Google or a web site and look at the different airlines there are dozens of different airlines that travel here. Once you have your flights booked then look at jetstar or virgin blue for domestic flights http://www.jetstar.com/ Qantas may have deals if you fly here with them for domestic flights. jetstar is there budget airline. August is a perfect time to be in Cairns for the Great barrier reef. That is the dry season but come September it can start to get very humid. I love The Whitsunday Islands. Virgin blue fly to proserpine then half hour bus trip to Airlie Beach which is the gateway to the islands. or they fly to Hamilton island. not sure if they fly from Cairns to there but definitly fly from Brisbane and probably Sydney. I have been to Singapore and Hong kong. I have been to Hong kong 3 times as i love it there . if you go there then the trip to the Big Budha on the sky rail is great,You will enjoy either place but Hongkong i find there is just so much to do. If you want to get better prices for accomodation then leave it for a week or so before and go to http://www.wotif.com.au for last minute deals. You may find it expensive at the moment as the Australian dollar is extremely high. You may want to look at places that have a kitchen and shop at the supermarkets and do your own cooking. Cabins in the Big 4 tourist parks or Top tourist parks have cabins . Some motels do but not many also apartments . I think the best holidays here are Campervan holidays . You travel with your accomodation and can stop when and where you want and can also stop in rest areas over night . Other airlines that come here are Cathay Pacific. Singapore airlines ,ethihad, Royal Brunei, Emirates. and many more
