What is the best travel credit card? (Traveling Australia for 1 year)?

Question by Spencer Miller: What is the best travel credit card? (Traveling Australia for 1 year)?
I will be leaving Canada for one year to work in and travel Australia. I need to find a credit card that doesn’t change me every time I use my credit card (ex. 2.5%)

Hope you can help me,

Thank you

Mastercard or Visa. Some places will charge a surcharge for using either American Express or Diners Club – 2% I think.

If going to Australia or even New Zealand Visa and Mastercard. Some places don’t like American Express or Diners. Diners these day is very hard to use over this way.

American Express is often not accepted , because of their fees to merchants. Visa is the widely accepted card. Don’t get those special travellers visa cards that say you can withdraw money from anywhere. I lost track of the number of rejects of that one !!
In Oz we have bank visa cards that only charge an annual fee, then so long as you pay within the specified days, at the end of the month, you pay no interest. But they do charge for cash withdrawals.

  4. Make sure you get a credit card that is either Visa or Mastercard, as American Express is not widely accepted here. But only use the credit card for large transactions eg paying for accommodation. You will get a foreign exchange transaction fee each time you use the card, and this cannot be avoided. But for other fees, you’ll need to shop around at banks to find out which card has the lowest.

For day to day transactions, get a Visa or Mastercard Debit Card tied to your savings account, with a four digit PIN. Again, shop around for the cheapest fees, but you’ll be able to use this card in any ATM.

Tell your banks that you’ll be travelling to Australia for a year. That way they will not put a stop on your account due to unusual activity.
