Uluru [Ayers Rock] is the spelling.
Choose the Great barrier reef if you go soon during the dry season until September. The weather will be beautiful . If you go to Uluru you will be very cold at night during winter here.
From Cairns you have The Great barrier reef and much much more you can choose to do. A trip to the rainforest, Port Douglas or up in the hills .
Definitely head for the Great Barrier Reef rather than Uluru. Not only is the reef spectacularly beautiful, but Cairns and the surrounding tropical areas are unforgettable and there are so many things to see and do.
I don’t know where you’re coming from, but if its Europe or North America, you really should come for more than 7 days as you’ll spend nearly that long just getting here and back and recovering from jet lag. Even if it means putting off your trip for another year, do try to save enough for at least 2 weeks here.
Hi
I agree with the comments already made. It really is the perfect time of year for the Great Barrier Reef if you are coming before October.
Check out http://www.realaustraliatravel.com/great-barrier-reef-australia.html as this will give you good information on where to stay and also what else to do in the area. I would suggest
1) A day trip to Green Island to see the Barrier Reef
2) A trip through Daintree rainforest to meet the crocodiles
3) A walk along Cape Tribulation beach
Uluru is absolutely amazing too (Ayers Rock) but is better when its a bit warmer – post October. It is also an expensive place to get to and stay. Check out http://www.realaustraliatravel.com/ayers-rock-australia.html
As per the comments below, you really should allow 3 weeks in Australia. It’s OK to spend a week here if you intend to do a couple of weeks in New Zealand too. Anything shorter than that, seriously, it really just isn’t worth it. The jet lag will take you a week to get over.
Best wishes for your trip

It’s no contest ! If it’s a choice between them it has to be the Great Barrier Reef…it is one of the wonders of the world , a living organism …after all , a rock is a rock …this one just happens to be humungous !
Ayers rock, pronounced air-s rock…; Ularu is Oo-la-roo. Alright mate!
Bonza job cobber.
I hope you understand that Australia is a long way away, and the air fares are gonna cost you a bit. So if you can arrange it, take at least 2 weeks in Australia. Split it up maybe, go on a bus tour into the outback, or up to the rain-forest around Cairns, and a few days in Sydney, or Cairns, Darwin, or even Melbourne.
Down south its cool just now, but gets mighty hot. Up north its milder at the moment, but has sub-tropical issues, so planning around weather is vital.
Buy a cheap paper map and have it laminated maybe, use that when you are chatting about it. But also google maps or such can give you much additional detail when you find a place you like the sound of.
Email me if you like, but resolve some of your preferences first; like heat or cool climate? People or quiet places? Landmarks you want to see, make notes if you like.
great barrier reef. more to do, and personally, i think the things to see look better then uluru. i went at the beginning of this year but the best time to go would probably be around september. i went scuba diving on the great barrier reef. i didn’t get to go onto the best part of the reef but what i saw was still amazing. i’ve never loved fish so much, all the different colours, and the coral as well. and of course theres other stuff to do, like going on a yacht or skydiving(if you’re brave) and tons of other activities they have over there.
i can’t wait to go back.
Uluru is fantastic, but I wouldn’t want to spend a week there, and Alice springs really isn’t that fantastic.
The great barrier reef is on the coast with some wonderful beaches, the rain forests are totally fantastic, I love spending time there, you have a lot more activities and the accommodation is much better value for money. The food would be a lot cheaper too, remember that everything gets carted into Alice Springs, so everything costs a lot more.
Ew Ularu is so boring its just an orange rock with some pictures… I live in australia and the great barrier reef is where you should go. Theres heaps more to do you wont be bored, and isn’t it one the the wonders of the world or something? i dont know but its funny how people think everything here will kill them haha i dive with sharks all the time, in fiji vanuatu and here in aus im alive!
