Should I do a working holiday in New Zealand or Australia?

Question by TravelinWork: Should I do a working holiday in New Zealand or Australia?
I’m interested in doing a working holiday for a year. Being from the US my options are limited to Australia and New Zealand. I don’t think I’ll have the opportunity to do both, so which country would be the better place to go? Please give reasons why you are for/against one or the other. Thanks for your help!

You already asked this question in the Australia section and I gave an answer.

But I’d like to add that I disagree with what some Australians there said about Australia being more diverse, and I suspect is from their ignorance of the world outside of Australia. I think NZ has a larger variety of activities than Australia.

On the other hand, it would be easier to find work in Australia and you might have more money to spare (depending).

But as I said, I don’t think you’d regret either choice. Maybe you should flip a coin?

There is way more opportunity in Ozzie. Nzers that goto Oz earn on average $800 more per week.

If you look at the average earniongs and the unemployment rates of both places the answer will be obvious.

They are two very different countries. Australia is a huge continent and travelling round it would cost a lot and take a long time..
However, wages are higher in Australia. The big cities are cosmopolitan and there is plenty to do. Clothes are cheaper.
New Zealand is three small islands. It is very picturesque, with wonderful ski-ing opportunities and lots of outdoor sports. It is possible to cover these islands and see most of the places of interest in 5-6 weeks. Fares from Australia to New Zealand are very cheap if booked in advance.
My advice would be to work in Australia for 10 plus months and then take a 6 weeks visit to New Zealand. It seems pity to miss it out when you are so close.
Both peoples are friendly and open.
You are so close, its only 3 flying hours away.
