Samoa Traffic Chaos after Side Switch
The switch to driving on the left hand side of the road took affect at 6 am local time on Monday. Traffic police directed drivers from the early hours of the day to avoid congestion, while hundreds lined the streets to witness the change. The move is the brain child of the country’s prime minister, who said it would be more economical for Samoans to buy new and used cars from Pacific neighbors Australia and New Zealand. All the cars in those countries are designed for driving on the left side of the road. Yesterday and today were also declared public holidays to let drivers get used to the change.
