Q&A: Where do Australians go on holiday in Australia?
Question by lois lane: Where do Australians go on holiday in Australia?
In New Zealand the most popular places at New Year are Mount Maunganui and Whangamata and thousands of people go to Queenstown summer and winter. Are there similar places in Australia? I know about schoolies and fireworks, but where do lots of Ausutralians and visitors like to go? Like the top three hot spots?

Being from Sydney the most popular spots seem to be on the beaches down the South Coast, Port Stephens, Hunter Valley, Blue Mountains, Port Macquarie, Forster, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast.

I come from Wollongong just south of Sydney.
From here the top holiday spots would be the Gold Coast, Melbourne and the South Coast. Lots of families all throughout NSW travel down to the south coast, particularly during the summer holidays.
The snow down past Canberra is obviously popular at winter too.
Lots of people from Sydney and north come and holiday in Wollongong too, at Shellharbour or Kiama.
It would depend on where you live as to where people go. If I had to generalise the whole of Australia, I would say Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney first then North Queensland, South coast NSW and the Outback.
That is entirely up to the individual, what they like, whether they have a family or how much money they have. So to your question, it is somewhat difficult to answer.
In general, I’d say that young families and people love the Gold Coast. It has great night life up there and the theme parks are targeted towards younger people.
Older people may love to visit the country or check out wine fields. For example, the Hunter Valley.
IMO, the top 3 hot spots are:
1. Sydney (I’m from there and it’s so overrated).
2. The Gold Coast
3. Cairns
I am from Victoria, down south and have travelled around Australia a fair bit. There is so much to see. My top 3 favourite places would be:
1. Cairns – Great Barrier Reef
2. Central Australia – Uluru, Alice Springs…
3. Sydney – Harbour Bridge, Opera House (very iconic and fun to explore!!!)
Happy travelling
Schoolies and fireworks, right, whatever ??????
We go on holliday wherever we like. It is a big country with lots of amazing places to explore. Everyone is different so there aren’t 3 “hot spots”.
Members of my family have been to Uluru, the Whitsundays, Melbourne and to Darwin in the last 12 months.
We live in South-East Queensland so the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are reasonably close by for us to visit on a regular basis.
1) SURFERS PARADISE
2) BYRON BAY
3) WHITSUNDAY’S ( most amazing beautiful beach, never been but would lovvvveee to go one day)
