Christmas is the only time in Australia when extended families traditionally travel from all over the country to spend time together and that’s what I’ve always seen as the essence of Thanksgiving. If you exclude Christmas, we don’t have anything similar to Thanksgiving.

    None.

And we don’t want to have one that is similar. We’d rather do our own thing.

We don’t have a thanksgiving type holiday.
Christmas is when most families will come together for a meal, then on boxing day there are people who incorporate charity and giving away left overs.

In different religions families come together for different holidays and celebrations but christmas is the closest to one that the majority of Australian’s celebrate together.

Probably Anzac Day, which is on 25 April, it gives us all time to reflect on the stupidity of war, and to thank the servicemen who survived, and remember those who died.

We don’t have a similar holiday. The closest one seems to be Christmas.

I’ve never understood thanksgiving anyway. From an outsiders perspective, it seems to be a holiday celebrating Americans coming together to eat large amounts of food.

I say Christmas would be more like Thanksgiving. Since I live in both countries, it has become a tradition at my home to invite my family to gather at my home to celebrate Thanksgiving. I have taught all of the little ones about the meaning of Thanksgiving in the States, they make Pilgrim hats and Indian hats and have a jolly good time.
When in the Sates–we do the same thing–we will celebrate Anzac Day, as well as other Holidays which Americans do not .
