Q&A: summer in canada??!!! travel/ visa/ job help?

Question by Amy G: summer in canada??!!! travel/ visa/ job help?
Hey there, basically im trying to sort out a summer working in toronto. everywhere i look all i come accross are these overpriced packages for £600+ to help you get your visa and a job there but i know that there is a wayy cheaper way of doing it. Ive seen the guidelines on working in canada and it says that you have to have a confirmed job in canada before you go. is this definately the case? and if so, how easy is it to get a job in toronto? and how could i go about getting one from here without using one of these package things?
i had a working holiday visa in australia and got a job no problem but ive read that its harder in canada. im planning on coming around the end of may until september before i go back to university.
any advice would be really good. (im from northern ireland by the way)
thanks!!!

it is harder in Canada, but I’ve known plenty of British and Irish who have done it. It is a good idea to have a job lined up, if you can, or at least have enough $ to show you can support yourself for a while.

  1. Sorry, but temporary work visas are very difficult to obtain. You need a confirmed job offer from a Canadian company, AND you need confirmation from the Human Resources and Social Development Canada that the employer is permitted to hire a foreign worker. What that means is that whatever the job is, there are no Canadians who can fill it. It’s really too bad that the governments can’t get together and work out a plan for “Working Holiday Exchanges”. What a great experience it would be for students. The site below will give you more details. And as for the 600 pounds – that’s outrageous. To say nothing of the fact that they cannot guarantee a job.

The government of Canada has a good site about just such a thing. There’s lots of info on how to apply for visas, some challenges you may face in finding a job here, etc.
