I’m sorry to tell you but july is a terrible time to go to New Zealand unless you want to Ski then head for Queenstown You can have a lovely holiday there

Even though mid July is not the best time to visit unless you are specifically wanting a skiing holiday, there are other things to do. I’m also currently researching for a New Zealand holiday and I found this website very helpful:
http://www.jasons.com
I ordered some brochures via their website and they arrived from New Zealand within a couple of days. They have booklets containing things to do and see in each of the main cities as well as fantastic “drive yourself” maps and entertainment ideas.
Have fun!!! And don’t forget to take out travel insurance.
As far as flight go, check out webjet. They have some good deals going at the moment.

Ok..its the middle of winter but winter in quite a few places can be calm and clear ( but of course you can get stormy and just plain overcast).
For flights…well I am not sure where you are flying from….try http://www.expedia.com ( or .co.??) as I have always found them competative. For flying within NZ there is Airnewzealand.co.nz which will get you to both larger places and smaller towns, while jetstar will have just started its internal flights as well and you could get some decent flights between the main centres (but in general flights in NZ can be pricey if you don’t get deals).
Activities…well it depends on what you like…you can look at http://www.newzeland.com and http://www.aatravel.co.nz. The latter is good for accommodation and there is 101 things kiwis love or something which is good for things that are worth seeing.
THe West Coast of the South Island will be less wet at this time of year and the glaciers are great…among other things to see. You could always get the tranzalpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth ( in the winter is great as there is often snow at Arthurs Pass..like when I did it) or you can do the Coastal Pacific train from Picton to Christchurch which is lovely as well. Kaikoura has the whales which is halfway.
I really only know things in the South Island so thats why I am mentioning them. Of course you can go skiing and there will be a few places open in July I think. Queenstown and Rotorua are the touristy places but worth it.
airnewzealand.co.nz has some very cheap national flights. And the new Pacific Blue airline also. Unfortunately it rains all Winter here, so head for the snowy places like the South Island or Taranaki (National Park, Mt Ruapehu, etc). The North Island & very top of the South Island (Nelson), are best seen in the summer (February is good as the school holidays are over & the weather is usually warmest then with low rainfall). We have great beaches, etc for summer.
Make sure you do this scenic South Island rail trip (the North Island one isn’t worth it as it’s very long (13 hours!!). tranzscenic.co.nz
