We might be going to Adelaide and it would be nice to go somewhere else different as well, so we thought about going to Kangaroo Island. Can you catch a ferry from adelaide or do you have to drive to a closer town or something and then catch a ferry. And is Kangaroo Island a good place to go for a holiday?

KI is an amazing place to holiday! there are flights from adelaide to KI, but it’s better to catch the ferry because it’s cheaper and you can get your car across, which makes getting around KI easier. the ferry takes about 45 minutes or so, and leaves from cape jervis which is about 100km south of adelaide.

I’ve heard that Kangaroo Island is pretty good, although I’ve never had a chance to go there myself. You can’t catch a ferry from Adelaide to K.I though, you have to drive for about 2 hours to get out to Cape Jervis, and then catch the ferry.
Kangaroo Island is a very nice spot for a holiday. There’s plenty to do and the island is larger than most people tend to think. It tends to have strong cold winds especially on the coast, so bring some warmies even in mid-summer. As other people said, you take the car ferry from Cape Jervis. On the way to Cape Jervis are some of Adelaide’s loveliest beaches and the McLaren Vale wine region so you might want to spend a night there on the way.
There’s plenty of wildlife esp ocean-going wildlife such as penguins and sea-lions, caves and rock formations, fossils, fishing, farm tours eg cheese and honey, and national parks. Don’t go in mid-winter even though it’s cheaper, it’s just too cold. If you’re coming in winter consider going to the Flinders Ranges instead.
Food is expensive on the island, so it’s a good idea to bring a fair bit with you.
Like everyone else has already said Kangaroo Island is a great place to holiday. You can catch a ferry to Kangaroo Island but you have to drive 2 hours to Cape Jervis and you can’t take rental cars to the Island you can only rent cars on the Island. The best way of getting to Kangaroo Island is to fly there it takes about 30 minutes from Adelaide and the price is only $149 return on Rex Airlines and you can rent a car at the airport on Kangaroo Island.

what every one else has said, i caught the ferry across, you NEED a car, whether you hire one or drive there.
penguins are everywhere, sea lions are great too, honey, kangaroos, wallabys, etc.
i would also suggest (if you have the money) taking a joy flight over the island, the island has all these fields of flowers and everything and from the air it looks like a patchy quilt. amazing, coastline is billiant too!! one of the best flights i have ever done.
you will need a few days at least, we had 3 days and it was rushed, but we still saw alot.
its cold. esp where the sea lions are. so take warm clothes.

it’s a great place a large national park with good camping facilities just remember to put the food and drinks away at night as the animals are friendly and will rip up your wine cask….,a long way to the bottle shop. There are some new hotels very luxurious but you can rent a holiday home if budgeting. The beaches are good and fishing is great but you may need to hire a boat so good luck and have fun. We took our mountain bikes across on one trip and it was great as a lot of the walks in the park which would take hours we achieved in less than an hour …….some great out of the way beaches with not another soul about !
