Q&A: I’m An American..where should I go for my Working holiday visa!? Australia or New Zealand?

Question by Davion A: I’m An American..where should I go for my Working holiday visa!? Australia or New Zealand?
I have been to Australia. Never New Zealand.
NZ exchange rate is awesome towards the USD. But high cost of living, and I know not really anyone there..but its an adventure. Not as hot as OZ and not as many deadly animals..I will be fruit picking partially. So considering this…which do you think i should choose? Thank you soo much for your answers in advance. I’m an indecisive person ha, I NEED ur help, please. :-)

You’ve been to Australia, so I think you should head for New Zealand. It’s a really nice country, particularly when you get out onto the types of areas where you’d be fruit picking and when it’s all said and done, if you don’t like it there, you’re only a cheap plane ride away from Australia.

  2. I guess it depends on what you like to do when you aren’t picking fruit. (And there are other jobs you can get besides that.) But, if you like being outdoors, hiking and being on the beach, then New Zealand is for you. If you like big cities, nightlife and so on – probably Australia is better. You will find New Zealand is overall, more laid back. There are lots of back packer places to stay in New Zealand. It’s like someone told me – “There is a picture around every corner”. (But then, I live on the northern part of the north island, and think it’s beautiful here.)

Currently in New Zealand and the weather has already started to turn miserable. Certainly not the weather for comfortable fruit picking :(

Australia has plenty of backpacker jobs available throughout the year and following the harvest trail will just about ensure work as you travel around. Backpack DownUnder post backpacker jobs daily with contact details of the employers.

For a quick trip across the ditch from Brisbane, check out Air New Zealand as they have been having some great bargains of late.

Davion, if you work your itinerary correctly you can do both. Your problem with deadly animals is? You will probably find you mean reptiles, would you believe they try and stay clear of folks like you and me.

If your intention is for the fruit picking then I would say Australia. I notice on line that Qantas has a special at the moment for $925 return.
