depeding on the time of the year and the destination (Tokyo, Osaka, Okinawa, etc.), flights prices will vary. Usually, prices are higher around the holidays and in July-August. You should expect to pay around 1000-1500 AU$ [check a travel website for more accurate/up to date numbers]
accomodation: hotels, inns, hostels prices will vary wildly. assume at least 10,000 Yen per day and possibly as much as 20,000-25,000 Yen per day
food: about 1000 Yen for breakfast, 1000 Yen for lunch and 2000-3000 Yen for dinner. If you eat at the hotel, it will be 2 to 3 times more
transportation: initial arrival + departure = 3000-5000 Yen for the day. Other days, about 500-1000 Yen/day
misc: 1000-1500 Yen/day
for stays longer than 1 week, you’ll need to add some additional Yen to cover dry cleaning, supplies, etc.

How much time do you want to spend there ? My last 4 trips (June/July, September, November/December and December/January )over a period of 4 years cost me between a maximum of $5000 Australian and a minimum of $3000 Australian for an average of 4 weeks at a time. These costs included Return plane ticket , JR Pass, Food and a bed every night along with costs for sight seeing. Also included other bus and train tickets/passes.Spent some money on camera and camera equipment on one trip. I have not taken less than 200,000yen in cash each trip (about $2000 as a rough guide)The last two trips I came home with 50,000 yen in pocket.Only other costs have been for phone but that has been negligible.
