Q&A: How much should I expect to spend on domestic / internal flights in Australia and New Zealand?

Question by Stephanie: How much should I expect to spend on domestic / internal flights in Australia and New Zealand?
I’m from the US and going to Australia and New Zealand this July (I realize this time is a OZ/NZ student holiday as well) and shopping around for domestic flights and want to know if I’m getting a good deal or not… NATIVES or those who have spent a good deal of time there, since you have some experience with the airlines, your input would be especially GREAT!!! :-) (I already bought my flights from the US to OZ and back.)

What is typically a good deal for a flight from Melbourne to the South Island, New Zealand (probably Christchurch) and the South Island back to Sydney?

How about Sydney to Cairns/Townsville? Cairns/Townsville to Melbourne?

I’m wondering also when is a good time to buy flights… is it the earlier the better (and I should buy all of my domestic flights NOW!) or should I gamble and wait and see if better prices come up?

THANKS!

You need to look at jet star and virgin for flights within Australia. and over to NZ Qantas also but they are dearer Virgin have a happy hour between 12 and 1 pm australian time and jetstar have friday frenzy between 4 and 8pm on a friday australian time. http://www.jetstar.com/

  1. Buy your tickets now – You are planning to go to the South Island during the snow season so that will be full. Cairns is where all the Melbourne/Sydney people go in July (to escape the cold) so those flights will be full – and that not taking into consideration the school and uni holidays. So get in now – Melbourne – Cairns could put you back 800$ easy.
