Q&A: Gap year: New Zealand or Australia?
Question by Alleey: Gap year: New Zealand or Australia?
I’m wanting to take a gap year and i am torn in where to go. My mum is keen for me to go to New Zealand (Christchurch) because my sister went there, she loved it. But i’m more drawn to Australia cause i hear that New Zealand is a bit boring and it’s all about the scenery whereas i’m drawn to the social side of it and i hear Australia is the place for that
ALTHOUGH I also hear there are lots of bugs and scary dangerous things like spiders there and I am so scared of them, is it worth it? I neeed help!! I don’t really want to do both, i’ll probably do a full year in one of the places and take a few holidays to the other when I can. Thanks

Both Countries are great. New Zealand is definately not boring, as there is some wonderful scenery. Australia is also very beautiful in places and much , much bigger. Both have a real lot to see.
Australia has some wonderful cities and brilliant outback. Forests and both have skiing in winter. The East Coast of Queensland also has beautiful beaches and the Great Barrier Reef. If you stick to the cities, spiders and snakes are rare. Most likely you would see them in the zoo. If you were to travel to Melbourne there is a butterfly house, where you walk in an enclosure with butterflies. Really pretty.
New Zealand is only two hours flight from Sydney Australia, so if you were based in Australia you could still visit New Zealand (Christchurch) for a week or two if you wanted and the flights are relatively inexpensive.
no there are no scary spiders and bugs unless you live in the middle of the forest,
Trust me i have been living me my whole life and i have only seen a big black spider once in a pile of dead trees in my yard.
Australia.
there are bugs every where but there are only tons in the outback and summer. its loads of fun Ive been living my whole life. of course you can go to new zealand if you like sheep ( no offence )
It depends. I live in Australia and I love it and it’s such a great place but if your planning to go to the outback then Id actually say you should go to New Zealand. I think it’s just that the outback is a great place for a little while but it can become hard if your going to live there for a year. yes, there are spiders and snakes but there are spiders and snakes everywhere. Then agian, if your going to teh cities then Australia is definitley the place to go. Melbourne for the awesome shopping, Sydney for the eating and site seeing and Gold Coast for the partying. In the end, it’s up to you and what you like the best not anybody else
Why not do both?
After all they are so far away and both really cool. Here is a site that can help you with planning arriving on your gap year in australia. There are lots of cool things you can do out there, surfing, diving and partying. Best bet is to buy a cheap Oz Experience pass and head up the east coast.
New Zealand is not just beautiful landscapes. It is the extreme sports capital of the world! White water rafting, ice climbing and bungee jumping!
Are you kidding? New Zealand is not boring! This is the country where sports was born, we live to party and is the future. Everyone else is behind us. New Zealand is way cooler than Australia. Not to mention NZ is clean, white and green. It’s a lot safer and there are no snakes whatsoever. It’s amazing!
Australia is definately the best option as there is so much more to do and things to see. The people have a reputation of being really friendly and the night life is a lot of fun. I have lived here for 20 years and I see spiders all the time but I have never had a problem with them (most of them are harmless) and neither has anyone I know. You will enjoy it a lot more if you travel around with someone else.
