Q&A: Fiji Holiday Questions :)?

Question by Georgia Young: Fiji Holiday Questions :) ?
We are thinking of staying in Fiji for 6 nights on Denarau Island at the Radisson Resort. I would book with a special deal which means per person, 6 nights accomodation and return airfare is cheap of us. If you have stayed at the Radisson, or Denarau Island or even just Fiji, please try and help by answering the questions below!

1. Is Denarau Island an interesting place to stay for a week? Is there enough to do?
2. How do you obtain a meal package? I’m pretty sure the Radisson does not provide meal packages, but where else can I get one?
3. How often does it rain? I will be travelling there in December.
4. Without meal packages, are meals expensive?

Try and answer some! Thanks :)

I have never been to Denarau Island, but have been to Fiji in the last year. I live on another Pacific Island in the vicinity. I consider prices to be fairly low in Fiji. We have eaten nice meals in good quality hotels there for USD-8 per person. Personally, I wouldn’t ask for a meal package, but go out and find places to eat once you get there. December is rainy season, but it is also hot season, which usually means the rain dries up within a few minutes. Often, it will rain sometime during the night.

    1. Denarau is interesting if you like low-rise beach resort areas like the Hawaiian neighbor islands. It’s a world created for tourists with little or no local Fijian life. There’s lots to do if you’re willing to spend money on paid sporting activities like scuba diving, jet boat rides, etc. There are also numerous day trips by boat to offshore islands plus mountain hiking and orchid garden sightseeing. These are good but wouldn’t be cheap for a family.

    2. Yes, it’s the hotter, more humid season but the weather isn’t consistent and you could have fine weather all week. I wouldn’t decide only on the basis of the weather.

    3. Virtually all of the restaurants on Denarau Island are intended for tourists and they’re more expensive than the local restaurants in Nadi town about six kilometers away. Your best bet is to head for the Denarau Shopping Center at the port (a 15-minute walk from the Radisson) which has about a dozen restaurants in every category. My favorite is Cardo’s steakhouse and you should be able to eat well there for US$10 a meal. Beer isn’t overpriced. If you go, grab the two bottles of duty free alcohol per person you can buy in Nadi Airport at the shops just before the Customs clearance. That will save you money on bar drinks. Also check out the restaurant at the golf course opposite the Sheratons which is cheaper than the hotels and maybe nicer.

Finally, I found the Radisson very friendly and welcoming. On the downside, the beach on Denarau isn’t that great. But the swimmings pools are paradise!
