Yes – New Zealand and Australia (even though they are close by to one another ) they ARE two separate country, their own government and laws.
You need to apply for an Australian passport.

Yes, you definitely need a passport to get into New Zealand and you need one to get back into Australia (even if you’re an Australian citizen).
I can’t find the relevant New Zealand link, but here is the Australian one (and I assume you will want to come home):

The airlines won’t let you get on the plane in Australia if you don’t have a passport!
Absolutely! no question about it.
If you are leaving Australia you are entering another jurisdiction and a passport is required to prove your identity.
what on earth made you think you did not need one?
yes you do
I moved to New Zealand a year ago, so i went through all of this myself!
Yes you’ll need a passport. You don’t need a Visa to live/holiday/work/study here though. You can also drive on an Australian licence etc.
You can apply for your passport at most Australia Post Stores. Just get a form, fill it out, get the relevant paperwork (ie. Birth Certificate) and a passport sized photo, and then send it all in with your payment!
