Pregnant on a New Zealand working holiday visa?

Question by AjK: Pregnant on a New Zealand working holiday visa?
I’m travelling in New Zealand on a 12 month Working Holiday Visa with my girlfriend, we just found out she’s pregnant, great as that is, would we be deported before the baby is born? We’re UK citizens by the way.

Congradulations, im not 100% sure but i think you would be denied entry or required to leave while she can still travel safely. Or possibly be made to pay the hospital costs etc. You should check with imigration New Zealand.

What do you think? Answer below!

Are you guys planning to give birth to the baby here in New Zealand? As long as she is under 5 months pregnant. It should be fine, i don’t see what’s to worry about.

  4. Yip you would.
They’re making a french woman who is on a study visa leave to give birth in france, then come back to finish her studies.
    ridiculous i know.

I believe you are allowed to give birth here but have to pay for all health services which can be very expensive. I guess she’ll find out when she visits a doctor. Otherwise phone immigration so you know exactly where you stand.

  6. hopefully you will be.
we dont need more ppl from overseas coming here and having babies just so their kids are nz citizens.

What Oz said. You are most likely able to stay *but* you would have to pay for your own healthcare. Extending the visa once you have given birth (eg swapping to tourist or giving yourself a bit of time before travelling with a baby) is something different. You really should contact immigration.

The French woman btw has not had a visa revoked – she was in NZ on a tourist visa (or more specifically, was here as a visitor) and applied for a student visa. She’s not being told to leave because she is pregnant (regardless of what media are saying) she is being denied a further visa/change of visa because of her pregnancy. There’s a slight difference – in this case the OP found out afterwards. OP is in the country legally (as was the French woman) but OP does not mention changing to another visa (which is what the French woman did want). Instead, they are concerned about being deported prior to the birth.

Oh, and to someone else, having a baby in NZ doesn’t guarantee the child is an NZ citizen – those rules were changed a few years ago (2003??).
