New Zealand or Australia?

Question by TK: New Zealand or Australia?
My buddies and I are planning a working holiday for a year next year. We are all graduating in business management and are in our twenties, from Montreal, Canada.
I prefer going to New Zealand but my friend says we should go to Australia, and the third one is indifferent.
So I just wanted to know, what are the pros and cons of both countries when it comes to a working holiday? How can I convince him that New Zealand is better or how can he convince me that Australia is better?

You will be bored witless after a month in NZ…. beautiful country but there isn’t much going on !
There are almost as many kiwis here in Oz as there are there …that should tell you something.
My advice , plan to come to Oz for the majority of your stay & go spend a month in NZ during the ski season !

What do you think? Answer below!

Agreed NZ is spectacular, but there is less work and less variety. It’s probably better to do Oz and then visit NZ for a few weeks. Australia is very diverse in climate and landscape and of course very large, so there is more than enough to keep you interested for a year.

Clearly most answers are from Australians! Your best bet is to check out the immigration regulations for both countries to see what the work visa situation would be. Many New Zealanders do go to Australia because certain jobs have paid more – nursing, teaching, construction etc However with the recession things are changing. It may not be such a good bet anymore and immigrants will be the first out the door if there is no work.

New Zealand actually has heaps to do if you are into outdoor activities. Have a look at http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com for some ideas. It is a paradise for people who love any water sports, bush, mountains, extreme sports etc

You are much closer to everything in NZ. In Australia you have to drive long distances between places of interest. It really depends where you go in Australia. The “in between” countryside can be pretty boring. But there are also many beautiful parts.

Are you thinking on doing casual work or hoping to use your business management? I don’t know that either country would be that easy for that. But there are casual work schemes .

You could try and spend 6 months in each place if that worked with your work visas.

Australia can be a bit hot if you’re not used to the heat. It has some stunning sights and there is a lot of wildlife though most of it is dangerous and should not be touched.

NZ is beautiful and there is a lot going on over there despite what people say. NZ is a totally different experience to Australia. It’s weather can be a bit over the place which is a downside yet there is so much culture in NZ. You could visit Watangi and learn about the it’s past and history.
Rotorua is another place which has a lot of activities that you can try.

It depends on what experience you want but both are beautiful. I have lived in both countries so I know what they are both like. Australia may have more opportunities as it is bigger but you should choose the place you like best.
