well when you rule the world does the rest really matter? i mean it wont always be like that but it is now. its not r fualt tho, i mean the media only talks about the u.s. so we dont know. oh and its crazy expensive to visit outside the country so its hard to go overseas. trust me most of us want to, we just cant afford it.

It is the truth that the vast majority of Americans are ignorant of world affairs and current affairs.

  7. AppleBOOKS Nov 20th 2010

I agree those were really stupid questions, but did you speak to anyone with a college education ?

  8. samigirl22 Nov 20th 2010

  9. mic6010 Nov 20th 2010

I have a friend from AU who asked me a lot of weird questions about the states as well we tend to judge people based on what we see in the media

  13. kyminta19 Nov 20th 2010

maybe they been watching Steve Irwin

  14. forestskog Nov 20th 2010

It’s way overblown pple just dont notice their own stupid pple because at home your store manager doesn’t ask you questions about foreign çurrencies etc that would reveal their level of ignorance. e.g. in 2004 when ten countries joined the EU on a single day a study in the UK showed 50% of pple surveyed could not name ONE SINGLE of the new countries. Even in USA if 10 states joined the Union in one day pple would know most of them.

  15. forestskog Nov 20th 2010

The girl obviously mixed up Australia with AUSTRIA where they certainly do speak German. I’, 1/2 Swedish and yes everyone has heard a million times the hype about ‘dumb americans’with some anectdotes. It’s part true but way overblows. plenty of ignorant pple in Europe as well. I get ALL THE TIME variants of this in EU where pple ask me if they speak German in Sweden cuz they mix Sweden and Switzerland.

I’m from NC and I second Maty0269′s comment. You must have talked to some real rednecks.

  17. Maty0269 Nov 20th 2010

im from north carolina, those questions are funny, you may have been talking to our rednecks, lol but im 17 and know that their arent zebras in australia lololol

I am one of those freak Americans who DO take an interest in the outside world- I even know that Canberra is the capitol of Australia, NOT Sydney! I was stationed in West Germany in the mid 70′s & really dug the European culture. I think what I miss the most is the train system there-you could go just about anywhere in nice, clean trains for a reasonable price. But a lot of G.I.’s would not take any interest in anything at all- we called them ” barrack Rats”.

  19. stuart2785 Nov 20th 2010

we do think we are in our own world… i think history has something to do with it, but with the economy here now we are starting to realize other countries around us exist.

  20. esanchezyn2 Nov 20th 2010

El Salvador and Panama and East Timor have no currency, since they phased their old ones, they currently use the U.S. dollar.

  21. esanchezyn2 Nov 20th 2010

I been in Australia in N.T. W.A. and NSW and it seemed like America with British accents.

  22. dominicizgay Nov 20th 2010

i love the bit about the girl asking if they speak german in australia lmao. fool :P

  23. rb21122b Nov 20th 2010

Speak German in Australia? They problaby got confused with Austria.

  24. InXanadu2 Nov 20th 2010

You say you were in North Carolina, which for years elected and re-elected one of our most shameworthy bigoted senators EVER. No wonder the people you met had such a narrow worldview.

  25. manque15 Nov 20th 2010

LOl …well its a good eye opener for americans to go to other countries to see how we live…actually a culture shock is more like it.
