I have a connecting flight in the USA, how does that work?

Question by Ms. Lettuce: I have a connecting flight in the USA, how does that work?
I’m flying from Australia to Canada (I’m not Australian or Canadian) but my flight has a 4 hour connecting time in Los Angeles. How does it work during that connecting flight?
1. Will they scan my passport in the USA?
2.Do I need a visa for the USA?
3. Do I have to deal with immigration in the USA and how?

Note: I am traveling to Canada for holiday and have a visa for Canada. I am not traveling to the USA. I just have a connecting flight that leaves from there as almost all flights stop there.

Whether or not you need a transit visa for the U.S. depends on what your nationality is. See site blow and read the visa waiver list. If your country is on that list, you do not need a visa. You will go through customs and you will have your passport scanned.

You won’t need a visa if you do not leave the restricted area inside the airport. There is no need to deal with immigration if you stay inside the terminals.

the first answerer is correct–even in transit thru USA, you do need to clear US customs & immigration. If you would need a visa to visit, you will need a visa to transit.

  3. You will go through a security check will they will check your passpoet but, no visa is needed as long as you stay in the terminal area. Also you can go to this website to check out the rules:
