I’m starting to think about taking a year out and applying for a working holiday in Australia for 12 months. I know I have to consider the cost of flights and my visa, but how much will I realistically need to save before I head out there?

Well I’m guessing that you’re an American well the flights, economy of course, range depending on months you go as well as what company you choose but average it is about ,500 us dollars. My advice don’t go on quantas as recently they have had plane parts made in south Asia and have even broken down midflight recently.
At the moment, thanks to the American Subprime Mortgage Crisis, rent has dramatically increased. At this point you seriously need to consider options as rents have increased even more as many, many americans have decided to stay in Australia pushing rent prices higher as everyone needs a place to rent now. The price of petrol has also risen dramatically making the cost of living higher. Not to mention the american dollar dropping, the Aussie dollar is now the strongest it has been in about 25 years I believe.
It also depends on what city you plan on working in and what field as well. There are just so many variables I really can’t put a price on how much you will need very sorry!
