more than you think. Find out the exchange rate for your currency, then look on hostelworld.com and the yha site for hostel prices. Assume food costs more than it does in the USA, and fuel certainly does so transport costs more.
you also need an ETA travel authority (Get this online) and travel insurance. And some kind of plan that caters for just how big Australia is.
