I can’t give you any mathematical stats, but I can give you some basic information. At lot depends on how the economy is going and the latest reports are showing more and more Australians are staying home for hoildays and hooking the caravan or packing a tent and taking a road trip. You’ll find generally younger people and childless couples will take the “conventional” holidays as you put it. Also many retirees may take a cruise.

We have a group of people called the Grey Nomads. These are retirees that either spend some of their superannuation or sell the family home, buy a caravan or campervan or even a motorhome (those are what we call the big Winnebagos whereas the campervan is smaller) and basically hit the road and tour Australia. With high fuel prices some of them may stop for a few months and do some work like manage a caravan park and then head off. My own parents did just that about 5 years ago, they used some superannuation bought a caravan and decent 4WD vehicle and hit the road for about 6 months.

I live in Western Australia and i work in tourism a lot of tourists from other states and over sea
travellers hire camper vans over here and travel around in them, its a cheaper way of holidaying instead of paying for accommodation, they can get free parking in some places, where i work
there is a grassed area where they can stay two nights free.
as for Australians a lot of people retired from working own caravans and they head up north in the
winter time for a few months each year
