how long is needed between domestic flights in Australia?

Question by siwso: how long is needed between domestic flights in Australia?
I’m planning to go from Townsville to Perth but there are no direct flights. What is the shortest time I can stop in Brisbane for without missing my connecting flight?

If you’re flying Qantas, they should probably fly out of the same terminal, so about 45 minutes should be sufficient, although I never get layovers less than an hour just in case there are any delays.

  1. Out of Townsville, you are limiting yourself. Get yourself up to Cairns and you will find direct flights.

Go to http://www.qantas.com and enter your flight times. You will find more flexibility with connections, and of course with direct flights.

I did a quick search on Qantas site on a particular day… Townsville to Perth was $1080 starting price one way with connections, versus Cairns to Perth direct for $319.

It is of course not far to go from Townsville to Cairns by road.
