How long does it take to fly from America to Australia?

Question by Kristin H: How long does it take to fly from America to Australia?
My parents and I are going to Queensland, Australia this summer to spend our family holiday. We live in Panama City, Florida. So my question is how many hours would it take on average to fly from Florida to Queensland, Australia? This will be my first vacation taken outside of the States so I am looking forward to our adventure. So how long would it normally take to get there? I am just curious.

I live in Australia and have flown to the USA (and around the world) a number of times now. Australia is pretty far away from anywhere, especially from North America and Europe, however, there are many flights and an increasing number of carriers flying between the USA and Australia. Non-stop flights depart from Honolulu, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Forget Honolulu, as it’s almost as far away from Florida as Australia itself, so consider flying from Los Angeles, which has daily non-stop flights to Brisbane in Queensland. These flights take about 13-14.30 hrs non-stop. Flying to Sydney first gives you even more flight options, but flying time is a bit longer and then you’re still over an hour away from Brisbane, which is your destination.

Total flying time from Miami, Tampa or Orlando to Brisbane via Los Angeles is therefore around 18-20 hours plus connecting time. Flying via San Francisco, or connecting via Sydney or Melbourne in Australia or Auckland, New Zealand will make your journey time even longer, so consider a day’s stopover in LA to break your journey as it’s a really long flight!

Roughly between 18 to 20 hours. Pretty long so either bring plenty to do or just sleep the time away.

  3. about 15 hours maybe a little less or more depending on the jet stream.
