Question by phyllissockwell: Does an American ctizen have to have a VISA to travel to Australia?
I have a valid passport, and some sites say yes while others say no. I have went to the Australia travel site and I have read so much that I no longer can get heads or tails out of anything. HELP???!!

Yes, even an American needs a visa to get into Australia.

Yes you do. You need an ETA visa which you can apply for very easily on line. See site below, read section under Entry Requirements, and follow the links there. Just click on “Electronic travel Authority” in blue type.
You need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) which isn’t strictly a visa, but you won’t be able to board an aircraft or enter Australia without one. The ETA is ‘free’ but there’s an AUS$20 service fee.
Here is the official Australian government ETA site. Just click on Apply for ETA in the top left corner, complete the form and you’ll have your ETA within a few minutes:
