Aussies, is it a good time to do a working holiday in Australia?
Question by I love the cake: Aussies, is it a good time to do a working holiday in Australia?
I want to do a working holiday and Australia seems to be the easiest place to get a working visa and it just seems like a cool place. There’s an agreement between the US and Australia that makes it easier for Americans between 18-28 to go and work there. But now with the world economy being bad, would it be harder to get a visa/job in Australia? Are a lot of people losing their jobs?

its hard to find a job anywhere but you may have more luck here, people are losing their jobs in some industries but then others are hiring many at a time.
have a look at www.seek.com.au or www.mycareer.com.au to give you an idea on whats around

Hi,
I agree with the above – while people do loose jobs here, particularly in some industries, Australia is doing relatively well as our economy isn’t that much tied to America, but also a fair bit to Asian countries. So i think it’s not a bad timing. Here’s some handy info:

I’m currently on my second working holiday visa in Australia through BUNAC/IEP which I think you are referring to. I have found jobs pretty easy to get in Australia in terms of casual jobs i.e. coffee shops, restaurants, retail jobs etc. While Australia companies have been laying off employees, these tend to be big corporations ( Bonds, Rio Tinto) and I saw on television that even though there have been lay offs, places like Coles/Woolworths(grocery stores) and other casual jobs are always hiring. I got a retail job at the end of January on my first day out looking and was also hired at a coffee shop so there are jobs out there.
The only difference I saw between job hunting in America vs. Australia is you’re always going to need a resume. Its the first thing they ask to see as opposed to in America you usually just have to fill out an application (Target, Randalls, Dillards, Chilis, etc.). It doesn’t have to be anything fancy; mine was a simply one page resume stating address, contact info, previous employement and skills demonstrated.
An advantage of working in Australia is they pay based on your age. So if you’re in your early 20s, you can get about $20 an hour working casually at a grocery store as opposed to $6.75 at Walmart which I thought was cool. However, I’m based in Perth so this is all from a Western Australian perspective. Western Australia has the second highest job opportunities in the country, supposedly. I did meet a girl from Colombia who was based in Melbourne and she was learning english and found a job at a coffee shop so I don’t think you should have any troubles.
Hope this helped!!
