Any reason to try to visit any of the subantarctic islands south of New Zealand?
Question by trekster23: Any reason to try to visit any of the subantarctic islands south of New Zealand?
Hey all, This fall I will be be studying abroad in New Zealand and I am trying to figure out some interesting locations that I can visit while I’m there. Anyway I came across these subantarctic islands (Campbell, Auckland, etc.) that seem to be very unique and interesting so I’m considering trying to visit one of them. Now first off, especially if any of you have been to the islands, is there enough reason to take time to go there in the first place? And secondly, I realize they’re not particularly easy to get to. If my research is correct, government permits and escorts are needed, and you obviously need a boat to get there. So is it even reasonable to think that I would be able to visit the islands? And if so, how would I go about getting to the islands? Are there any type of agencies that offer some type of tour or excursion to the islands?
Thanks!

Why did you ask this question in Australia?
I’ve been close to the islands on fishing vessels and I would love the opportunity to go. You need to contact the Department of Conservation who administer the islands. You can get there in two ways, you can go on a guided tour and its really expensive, or you can volunteer with the Department but your chances are kind of slim getting there that way.

I am a southern kiwi, originally from Bluff(botton of the Mainland ie South Island) Dont know much about getting to those island but it will not be easy
Suggest you try Stewart Island bout an hour ferry ride from Bluff, It has about 30km of roads and over 300km of walking tracks. One goes around whole island and will take upwards of 2 weeks. A nearby island is a designated bird sanctury with regulars tours
You may have heard of a saying ‘Four season in a day” when I was down there a couple of years ago we got hit with four seasons in an hour. But is some of the most beautiful natural country we have

You need to be part of a research team from a university/government department, write project, have a budget get i approved etc in order to visit. Its not public access.
Hey Yank, do us a favour and in the ‘FALL’ stay in America.Someone as educated as you who can figure out all by herself she needs a BOAT to get to the middle of nowhere in a huge ocean is just too intelligent for us downunder. You state you realise you need the- BOAT -to get there, then ask in the next sentence –how will I get to the Island? UMMM, –the- BOAT- you mentioned may be a bit of a clue????Tell us Southerners, are all Yank college girls rocket scientists like you?
Or, maybe you should come in AUTUMN, get a lift on an ORCA with a young Wahine Whale Rider?Better still, stand on the waters edge at Invercargill and bunjy jump across. You will have that magic American dollar in your pocket and the whole world knows it only goes round because of it so anything is possible–HEY?
