My first advice would be not not to take a girl friend to Thailand It is asking for trouble. Taking a girl to Thailand is like taking coals to newcastle or Fosters Lager to the Munich Beer festival. Western women are maddened by the site of so many happy western men in thailand and it rocks their security to the foundations and you my friend will pay the price. Go to Vietnam, Laos or Malaysia. Definitely go to Thailand but go alone.

Come up to Chaing Rai, it is a beautiful area with hot springs waterfalls, rivers, hill tribes, elephants. Monkeys, a slower pace of life than Bangkok or the husstle of the touristy south or islands.
We have limestone caves, the gloden triangle, fantastic people , and oh yea my wife has a small thai restaurant near the sports stadium, and 20% of the profits go to buy shoes for the poorer kids in the area. P.S. she is a good cook. And the cashier on the weekends is my 16 year old step daughter (tip her big). LOL
it is a great area with very little in the way of girley bars, but there is nightlife. family safe and inexpensive. Also cool in the winter,
Thailand is a great place to visit for everybody. There are places for singles with red light area like Pattaya, Patpong and Soi Nana in Bangkok, but there are also beautiful and romantic places for couples and beautiful beaches where many families use to spend their holiday every year.
Thailand is so different from place to place that it is impossible not to find the perfect place for each person.
If you travel in July August I suggest you to visit the East coast of Thailand where are located Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, there you will find good weather and calm sea, beautiful beaches where you can rent bungalows directly on the beach.
Koh Tao offer the best underwater in all area.
I suggest you to bring as little clothes as possible because in Thailand they are so cheap that you will certainly want to buy many there. Anyway light cotton clothes are fine, you may need some warmer clothes in the evening or early morning.
You can change very easily either cash or travel cheques. There are atm machine everywhere where you can get cash with your credit card.
In the main banks and touristic areas in possible to get cash from the atm machine even with visa electron, maestro, cirrus e most popular debit cards.
You should bring some cool comfortable clothing such as flip flops, shorts, t-shirts, etc. Also, it might be an idea to bring some mosquito repellent if you suffer from mosquito bites.
You will find you can get most of the essentials out there and it will most probably be far cheaper than what it is in the West!
As for money, I would bring a few hundred dollars in travelers cheques for backup; you should be able to use your credit/debit card for cash withdrawals from the Thai ATM’s but check with your bank.
I usually advise first timers to Thailand to take a trip to Bangkok for a few days, then have a week or so in Phuket and/or Samui.
Bangkok is a very busy metropolitan area with A LOT going on, whereas Phuket and Samui are a bit more relaxed and chilled out. Domestic flights in Thailand are pretty reasonable – check out Air Asia.
Be safe and have fun in the land of smiles!
